Olympiad Is anyone following the chess Olympiad? Unfortunately, the traffic is keeping the web site down often (www.35chessolympiad.com/), but I'm following the US team (ranked #10) and the Vietnamese (#40). Kasparov is playing for Russia, and of course they're the favorites, with Hungary also feared.

The US did poorly in 2000 (I think we drew against the team from the Vatican City), but we nearly won it in 1996.

They're actually testing for "performance enhancing drugs" at this Olympiad, so if Judit Polgar shows up with 40 pounds of extra muscle and starts bending steel folding chairs with her bare hands, we'll know it's from good training only. Thank God.

Chess Olympiad The results are still looking a bit lopsided at the moment, they will need to play a few more rounds before all the cream rises to the top.

Glad to say that the never ending battle between the US Virgin Isles and the British Virgin Isles is going the way of the Brits so far !! Mind you, some of the competing countries I have never even heard of !!

Our British team is supposedly ranked #6 but we have sent a weakened team and I doubt that they will live up to that No#6 billing. Some of our best British players have given up playing Chess in order to get a "real" job.

Good to see you posting again Sarah,

Kind regards,

Cal

Israel is only at the 65th place ... boo hoo ... losing to Denmark (!?) and Turkmenistan (???) and only drawing with Switzerland - in all those matches we out-rated the opposition by 50-150 rating points :-(

boing finn at 46 and 43.. deep sigh. Couple players here declined the invitation bearing in mind the hysterically fast time control. Even did this before dope tests wud have had double reason to skip...
hopefully the site holds fine today so the radio feed will work. much nicer to follow event simply listening moves and going through it in head then stare the 15' beast on the table.

I am following The chess olympiad. Great performance by Team Finland today, victory in a match vs very strong opponent!

Israel disappoints again, only a draw vs. Croatia in a match we could have won 2.5-1.5 or even 3-1. Especially strange is the conclusion of this game:

White: Avrukh (ISR) Kg1, Rc8, Bd7, pawns c7, f2, g2, h2
Black: Sulava (CRO) Kg7, Bb3, Be5, pawns a5, e5, f7, g6, h7
Black to play, white's last move was c6-c7

White has both material and positional advantage, and two strong threats: Rg8+ and Rb8, winning a lot of material. In fact if I was black here, I would be seriosly contemplating resignation. But, in this position, the players agreed to a .... draw !?!? WTF ? How could one agree to a draw as white here ? Can anyone explain ??
brunetti 12 ( +1 | -1 )
Please correct the position, since Black has botha a Pawn and a Bishop at e5 :) Otherwise any assessment would be wrong.

Spain Is 25. Anyone knows why Shirov is not playing for Spain?

The American men's team did well today, but against a so-so team. The women's team lost against the Russians, but they're doing great-- beating both China (the best women's team in the world) and Georgia and were in 2nd place before round 6 (but will drop after the loss to Russia). As with soccer (football) it's the women's team that's showing the men how to get the job done!

Cal: A weakened English team? You have Michael Adams, Nigel Short and Speelman-- the only players I can think of that you are sorely missing would be Matthew Saddler and Hodgson -- but still a good team, at least for the top three (and they're doing very well now, drawing today with the excellent Ukraine team). The US is lacking Fischer, Kamsky and Morphy, who retired to New Orleans and is not answering his phone.

Sarah Matthew Saddler is a big loss to the England team, but young Luke McShane is proving to a fair replacement. Also, one of our team members failed to even arrive in Bled, as he had his passport stolen, and, even worse, his laptop computer went missing too !! This would have contained all his analysis for the Olympiad. Not sure if he (or the laptop) has arrived yet !!

British police are believed to looking for an eccentric, grizzled old US pensioner in connection with the theft....so maybe Fischer will have an impact on the Olympiad after all !!

:)

Kind regards,

Cal

Russia tastes defeat for the first time! The hungarian team wins 2.5-1.5, the only victory coming from the relatively unknown Robert Ruck on board four vs. Peter Svidler.

Another Peter (Leko) drew Kasparov, and Grischuk-Polgar and Almasi-Khalifman were also drawn.

Israel wins 2.5-1.5 vs Romania and advances to, ugh, somewhere around 16h place give or take a couple. And to think that we were ranked 4th in the pre-tournament ratings ...
