50 ( +1 | -1 ) If the Queen could move like the Knight (try it!)A friend and I played a couple games where the Queen could additionally move like a Knight. Initial opening play was not surprising, but the middle games were generally short and lead to a quick attack for one or the other. Some funny differences were the Queen's ability to checkmate by itself, and the greater than normal success of sacrifices to set up the Queen's attack.
The best opening strategy appeared to be 1 e4 followed by Qe3 somewhere in the opening to put pressure on the soon to be open file.
27 ( +1 | -1 ) maharajah chessAn interesting variation where one side has ONLY the Q+N piece you described(the maharajah or super-king) and the other side has the usual chess pieces. Objective of each side,to checkmate the other. Pawn promotion not allowed. It's actually tougher than it seems.
71 ( +1 | -1 ) Variation on the same themeI have begun to play a lot of Gothic Chess (on a 10x8 Board), where there are two extra pieces, an Archbishop - which has Bishop + Knight moves and a Chancellor - which has Rook + Knight moves. This proves an excellent game and I am currently working hard to improve my technique. My only defeat so far has been to the World Champion but in a year or so I hope to gain my revenge !! :0)
You can try the game on www.brainking.com. It is good fun and a nice change from standard chess. Also, there are no chess computers that can play Gothic Chess so every game is guaranteed to be a fair contest. Maybe Mike will bring the game to Gameknot at some future time.
